Aqua Sphere XCEED goggles

Developed in conjunction with Michael Phelps and US Olympic coach Bob Bowman, these racing goggles are not designed for open water, but if you prefer a smaller goggle then we really rate the XCEED. We tested the clear lens version but mirrored lenses are also available at £44.99, and the goggles come in six colour choices (we tested the fluorescent yellow pair).

After wearing larger, open water goggles the snug fit of racing goggles takes a bit of getting used to, but we found them comfortable throughout an hour-long training session and would be happy wearing them in open water racing.

We liked the fact that the goggles come with four different-sized nose pieces so you can fit the goggles exactly to your face. Once fitted the nose pieces were flexible but sturdy. Adjustment of the strap was simple with a basic toggle at the back of the head.

The curved lenses give a wide field of vision. According to Michael Phelps the visibility is “insane”. Although we wouldn’t go that far, the field of vision was wide (although not as wide as with open water goggles and masks).
