Honoring Rose Pitonof’s World Champion Winning Swim from Manhattan to Coney Island.
On August 13, 1911, 17 year old Rose Pitonof jumped into the East River at 26th Street, Manhattan, and swam to Steeplechase Pier, Coney Island, earning the women’s title of Long Distance Swimming Champion of the World.
Each year in mid August Rose’s epic achievement is honoured by staging an open water swim event that follows her history making route.
