Pop the kettle on, grab a highlighter pen and get ready to be inspired to set a new challenge or goal!

There is nothing like that hot neoprene and suncream scent at the start of any outdoor swimming event. It is like the smell of rain after a dry spell, it is a very specific smell and if you get a whiff of it at any time away from the water’s edge, it will transport you to open water swim events! No idea what I mean? Well, maybe this is the year you line up with fellow swimmers and dip your toe into the swim event world.

I like bobbing about with my pals like anyone, but deciding to enter a swimming event, planning it, training for it and finally taking part in the event itself, is a unique and special thing. That whirly feeling in your tummy before your skin hits the water or trying to find some space in a sea of elbows and feet before hitting your swim-rhythm – it is all perfectly normal and strangely enjoyable.

Our event guide is designed to inspire, inform and challenge you. More than ever swimmers have brilliant choice when it comes to open water swimming. Down rivers, around lakes or across seas – there is a distance, location and event for everyone.

Maybe you will tackle your first mile in open water down the River Thames at the Outdoor Swimmer Henley Swim Festival this July? Or perhaps you will join me and features writer Rowan Clarke in London’s Dock 2 Dock? Whatever your swim style, I hope you find something worth training for in this month’s magazine.
