FINIS Edge Training Fins

Our first reaction to FINIS Edge Training Fins was: “these look different!” This, in fact, is often our response to new products from innovative company FINIS.

Having a heel strap rather than enclosing the foot completely as many other fins do provides a surprisingly comfortable and versatile fit. The fin is held in place by squeezing on the sides of the feet, leaving the toes free. We didn’t suffer any discomfort or chafing while testing them. The ‘hydrodynamic vents’ either side of the foot are designed to aid the natural kick cycle, increase propulsive forces and reduce drag. It’s hard to measure whether this actually works, but we found the fins to be very effective. When using a two-beat kick, they didn’t disrupt stroke rhythm and provided an uplift in speed without adding too much strain to the legs. On the other hand, with a dolphin kick or strong six-beat kick you can really feel the power driving you forward and the increased workload for the relevant muscle groups.

Overall, we liked the fins. If you already have a good pair of training fins, these are probably not different enough to be worth adding as a second pair. However, if you are replacing your old fins or buying some for the first time these are practical and robust as well as effective so definitely worth considering.
