Marsden claims victory in Subway Maracas Open Water Classic 5k

Trinidad and Tobago’s top open water swimmer Christian Marsden claimed his third consecutive victory in record time in the Subway Maracas Open Water Classic 5k title at Maracas Bay.

Sixteen-year-old Marsden, who placed 13th in the men’s marathon 10k swim at the 2015 Pan American Games, completed the course in 1hr 5mins 17secs, setting a new record for the event and beating his 2014 winning time of 1:07:52. Jivan Chee Foon, 19, was second in 1:09:19 and Sachin Sankar, 18, placed third in 1:12:33. Both swims were PBs.
English Channel swimmer and Barbadian open water legend, 71-year old Chris Gibbs, also competed in the race – finishing 17th overall and winning his age-group in 1:34:48.
In the women’s race, Shania David (1:14:20), Brianna Patterson (1:17:01) and Chisara Santana (1:17:24) took the podium places.
The day also featured a 2650m event. The women’s race was won by Jada Chatoor in 37mins 22secs while Kael Yorke took gold in the men’s race in 36mins dead.
