Swimmable Rivers in London: a bold 10-year vision
An ambitious plan to make London’s rivers swimmable within the next decade
The London Assembly Environment Committee has engaged NOWCA as part of its investigation into the Mayor’s ambitious plan to make London’s rivers swimmable within the next decade. The committee is consulting with key stakeholders, including the Environment Agency, Thames Water, local boroughs, Catchment Management Partnerships, and NOWCA, to assess what is needed to turn this vision into reality.
Last month, NOWCA and Love Open Water hosted Assembly Members at the London Royal Docks to explore the plan in greater detail. During the visit, we shared insights on the social, health, and economic benefits of open water swimming, as well as the growing demand for safe, accessible swim spaces. The committee was especially interested in our pioneering approach to safety and our efforts to make wild swimming more inclusive and community focused.
NOWCA remains committed to supporting this important initiative, which aligns closely with our mission: more water, more people, more safely. We will continue to share data and expertise that help shape a future where swimming in London’s rivers (and beyond) is safe, enjoyable, and available to all.
