Swim your own swim: Meet Moody Mermaids founder Vicky Staple

Moody Mermaids was born out of the idea that you are only a swim away from a good mood, says founder Vicky Staple

Tell us a bit about your story with water and swimming

Wild swimming and winter swimming for about five years. I had sort of lost myself and become a slave to a very demanding job. I remembered the carefree summer days as a child when we’d walk down the valley to a local beach and spend the day there. I wanted that back. I hadn’t swum in years and the thought of putting on a costume was terrifying. I remember my first dip in a chilly river on Dartmoor, covered in a long t-shirt and cycle shorts. I now swim a decent distance; I’m not fast, I swim my own swim. Who knows what I’ll manage next year!

How does time in and around the water enhance your life?

I’ve met wonderful people in my swim journey, all brought there by different reasons but united by the fact we leave the water feeling alive, spirits raised and with a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. I have become braver, stronger and happier and swim in beautiful Moorland rivers, quarries and the north Cornish coast. I feel connected to the nature and environment around me. I notice the little things. I have slowed down.

Where did the inspiration for Moody Mermaids come from?

The name came from a small group of my friends. Water is healing; we could chat, laugh, cry and leave the week’s problems in the water. You’re only a swim away from a good mood.

What makes your offer unique?

I swim all year and as my swimming and distances have improved, I wanted a suit that kept the wobbly bits in place! I’d had a few embarrassing malfunctions in the pool and realised I needed good, supportive coverage. I’m not a skinny-minnie and lots of styles didn’t cut it. The Brave swimsuit is double lined, chlorine and sun cream resistant so resilient and a tad warmer if you swim skins through the winter, it doesn’t contravene any winter challenge rules. I hope the suit is affordable and inclusive from a 14-26. Neoprene suits will be available later in the year –designed for curvy mermaids by a curvy mermaid.
