Entries open for Marathon Swims 2019

Marathon Swims has announced the dates for its 2019 event at the London Aquatics Centre as 9 and 10 November, and entries have opened today.

Billed as the “London Marathon” of swimming, Marathon Swims offers participants the opportunity to swim the marathon swim distance of 10km at the home of swimming for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. 10km has become a popular challenge distance for outdoor swimmers but Marathon Swims believes it is the only organiser to offer the distance as a pool challenge.

The event follows a unique format that sees swimmers start on one side of the pool and swim two lengths in each of the pool’s 10 lanes to complete a kilometre. Swimmers then exit the water and run or walk the width of the pool back to the start point to begin their second kilometre. Ten swims, makes ten kilometres.

For those not yet ready to take on the full marathon swim distance there are 1km, 5km and relay challenges.

The Marathon Swims format delivers instant, reliable RFID chip-timed results. The dynamic scoreboard and poolside screens show leader changes, numbers of laps and record times as they happen. The result is a highly engaging event for both participants and spectators in a stunning venue.

Next year will mark the third outing for the event, which sold out in its first two years. 10km entries are expected to fill fast.

Marathon Swims founder, Diccon Loy says: “We have been delighted at the response and interest in Marathon Swims. To engage such great partners and to sell out in our first two years proved to us that swimming as a sport has great potential for growth and development. We set out to create an experience and challenge like no other in the pool. We wanted to deliver the same sense of occasion and challenge as the London Marathon delivers for runners. We’re excited about where we can take this innovative swimming concept.”

Outdoor Swimmer is delighted to support the event again in 2019 as a media partner alongside founding event-partner Better. Swimming holiday provider SwimQuest and coaching company Swim for Tri are also event partners.
