Marnaton returns to Formentera and adds exclusive four-day challenge

The selection process opens today for a new exclusive four-day sea swimming challenge in Formentera created by the Catalan-based swim event company Marnaton.

Formentera is the smallest of the Balearic Islands and is famous for its beaches and clear water. “Raid Formentera”, as the swimming challenge is called, runs from 23 to 26 May 2018. It’s something of a mystery tour as the exact swimming routes and distances are dependent on weather and wind conditions and will only be finalised at the last moment. The organisers hope to include a 17km stage and all applicants are expected to be prepared to swim that distance if they are signing up as a solo swimmer. There is also an option for swimmers to work in pairs where they take it in turns to offer kayak support to their swimming partner.

Whatever swims are finally chosen, Marnaton say all are beautiful and all are challenging. The event has therefore been limited to 10 solo participants and 20 pairs and potential swimmers need to demonstrate their swimming capabilities and experience in the application process.

In addition to the exclusive four-day event, there is also a mass participation event on 26 May offering a choice of distances of either 4km or 11km. Both swims are limited to 300 entrants.

Marnaton’s full calendar this year features five long distance swims, the Formentera challenge and a tough swimrun event along Spain’s rugged Costa Brava.

The closing date for entries to Raid Formentera is 14 March 2018.
