Lanzarote: swim, sea, sun and in sync with the UK

With mild temperatures and golden rays, Lanzarote is the perfect winter escape for a quick sunny break. Ella Foote heads to Barcarola Club in Puerto del Carmen

The Barcarola Club in Puerto del Carmen is the perfect base for a short swim-focused escape. Lanzarote is a destination that works brilliantly at this time of year: the sun is warm but not scorching, the sea is inviting and the crowds are nowhere near the summer peak. Each day offers a chance to explore volcanic landscapes, wander along black-sand beaches, or slip into the Atlantic for a refreshing swim.

Puerto del Carmen itself is lively, with independent cafés and a charming seafront promenade that’s ideal for early morning swims or sunset strolls. From here, you can access calmer coves for open-water dips, or join guided swims along the coastline if you fancy a bit of company.

For me, the combination of sun, sea, and easy access—plus staying somewhere comfortable and central like Barcarola Club—makes Lanzarote a top choice for a quick getaway that feels like a proper holiday, even if it’s only a few days long.

The accommodation

Barcarola Club was founded in 1972 and has recently been renovated to offer modern comfort while keeping its relaxed, family-run charm. Nestled in lush tropical gardens just steps from Puerto del Carmen’s seafront, it’s an ideal base for anyone chasing Atlantic swims, sunrise dips, or a quick splash before breakfast.

The hotel has 85 rooms, each thoughtfully designed with private terraces overlooking either the gardens or the sea. I stayed in a garden-view room, a bright and airy space perfect for writing, lounging, and drying off after an invigorating open-water swim. Coming back each afternoon felt like stepping into a calm oasis, the scent of the sea mingling with the rustle of palm fronds.

For swimmers, Barcarola is brilliantly placed. The calm, clear waters of the nearby beach are perfect for gentle laps or more adventurous open-water sessions, while the hotel’s pool and outdoor jacuzzi offer a warm-down option after bracing Atlantic dips. There’s even a dedicated wellness area for stretching or yoga, ideal for loosening up before hitting the waves.

The swimming

Lanzarote offers a completely different kind of freedom in the water, where the Atlantic feels warm, clear, and inviting. From Barcarola Club, it’s just a short walk to Puerto del Carmen’s seafront, where small coves and calm beaches make it easy to slip in and out of the sea. Gentle entries, clear waters, and sheltered spots mean you can swim at your own pace, whether you want a short morning dip or a longer open-water session along the coast.

Playa El Barranquillo

If you want guidance or a boost in confidence, Swim Lanzarote offers expert coaching for swimmers of all levels. Founded by Paul Cardwell Hounam, the programme focuses on technique, safety, and building confidence in open water. You can book one-to-one sessions, join group swims, or take part in bespoke training days tailored to your goals. Paul’s relaxed approach makes the ocean feel approachable even for nervous swimmers, and his insight into currents, tides, and technique transforms a regular swim into a richer, more confident experience.

There are plenty of routes along the coastline to explore, with natural pools and sheltered bays to discover. I swam early one morning under the rising sun, then returned to Barcarola for a leisurely breakfast on the terrace, salt still in my hair and the Atlantic breeze lingering on my skin. For anyone looking to combine sea swims, sunshine, and a short-break escape, Lanzarote and Swim Lanzarote make the perfect pairing.
