5 historic indoor swimming pools in the UK

It’s still winter, which means it still too cold to convince some swimmers to venture out for a wild or outdoor swim. If you can’t get to some of our favourite outdoor heated lidos, but are still looking for a swim with a difference, then check out some of our favourite historic indoor pools from across the UK.

1 – Bramley Baths, Leeds

This Grade II* listed Edwardian bath house first opened in 1904, enabling local residents to wash, swim and use the Russian steam baths. Originally a steel foundry, the building’s chimney can be seen from across West Leeds. It is now run as a community-led, not for profit centre for fitness, health and fun.

2 – Marshall Street Baths, London

Set in the heart of busy Soho, Marshall Street Baths are an oasis of calm. Opened in 1931, the 30m pool is lined with marble and retains the classic charm of when it was built.

This Edwardian swimming pool is the oldest of three Grade II* listed pools still in use in Britain. It opened in 1907 and is now run by the local community. It was used as a casualty station during World War II and was hit by incendiary bomb which caused £5 worth of damage – £271 in today’s money.

4 – Mounts Baths, Northampton

A spectacular art deco pool which opened in 1936. The Mounts Baths has huge arches which span over the main swimming pool as well as Turkish hot rooms, great for relaxing in after a swim.

Originally opened in 1887, Warrender Baths retain many original features, including Victorian poolside changing cubicles. Home to the Warrender Baths Club swimming club.
