Entries are open for Portishead Popsicle, a festive cold water swimming gala on Saturday 10 December

Outdoor Swimmer are thrilled to announce that they’ll be taking part in Portishead Popsicle, a cold water swimming gala taking place 10 December.

OS editor Ella Foote, digital journalists Jo Tinsley and Abi Whyte, and contributor Rowan Clarke will be braving the chill and donning festive headgear for the event at Portishead Open Air Pool. In previous winters the temperature of the pool has dropped as low as 4°C.

Entries are open for the fun swimming gala, with events including a 133m (4 lengths) and 333m (10 lengths) relay and The Grand National, for which entrants must ride an inflatable unicorn for two lengths. There’s also the popular Fast & Furious relay event, in which teams of four will have 15 minutes each to swim as many lengths as possible.

Participants can opt to wear wetsuits if they wish, but it’s not compulsory. Fancy dress is encouraged, with extra points awarded for imaginative headgear!

Some festive cheer

Participants can enjoy mulled wine and mince pies after their swim. The hot tub will also be open for a warming soak.

All profits from the event will help to support this community run open air pool. Swimmers are also welcome to raise funds for causes close to their own hearts.
