The 100-year-old outdoor swimming race

The Nelson Mandela Bay aQuellé River Mile celebrates its 100th anniversary in January 2024

Created in 1924, the 100th anniversary edition of Nelson Mandela Bay aQuellé River Mile will take place on the weekend of 20-21 January 2024. The event, which claims to be Africa’s oldest swimming event, is also known as the Sundays River Mile. It takes place just upriver of the Sundays River mouth, where it empties into the Indian Ocean in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

The celebratory event will additionally feature a secure festival area in Cannonville with craft displays, other sporting activities, live music and a retail village.

For overseas visitors to the river swimming event, there is a wide range of accommodation options in Cannonville, which is only 5km from the entrance to the Greater Addo Elephant National Park.
