February issue nearly ready plus training session ideas

January is always a busy month for us at Outdoor Swimmer as, after taking a break over Christmas and New Year, we have very little time to produce our February issue. Luckily, our brilliant writers and dedicated editorial team have done a fantastic job and the new issue, which goes to press tomorrow, is looking fabulous. Things to look out for in February include:

  • How outdoor swimming can help you stay healthy into old age and live longer
  • Linsey Cole talks about the impact of her Urban Mermaid adventures and tells us exactly why she decided to swim the length of the Thames in November
  • Sports psychologist Helen Davis shows us how to deal with the cold, mentally
  • Ella Foote interviews Salt on your Tongue author Charlotte Runcie
  • Elaine Howley uncovers the history of Victorian swimming star Agnes Beckwith

Meanwhile, as well as working on the February issue, I’ve been putting in the miles in the pool as I start to train for the 21+km Vidösternsimmet in Sweden in August. I’m sharing my training sessions on our website and via my personal Twitter account (@SimonDGriffiths), so if you’re looking for session ideas, feel free to borrow and adapt as you like. However, do remember that your training should fit into a broader plan based on your current levels of fitness and what you want to achieve. For example, if you’re training for the English Channel, these sessions might make a nice change but probably won’t form the core of your overall training plan.

Today’s photo of the week is of Leonard Martin, taken by his girlfriend, on a recent trip to Turkey with Strel Swimming Adventures. The picture was taken near Kas, on a morning swim as the swimmers were lit by a low sun rising behind them

In each issue of the magazine we publish a selection of your images in our Selkie Reader Photo Contest. To be in with a chance of having your photo featured in the magazine and winning outdoor swimming kit and apparel from Selkie Swim Co enter your best pics now.

I created Outdoor Swimmer in 2011 (initially as H2Open Magazine) as an outlet for my passion for swimming outdoors. I've been a swimmer and outdoor swimmer for as long as I remember. Swimming has made a huge difference to my life and I want to share its joys and benefits with as many people as possible. I am also the author of Swim Wild & Free: A Practical Guide to Swimming Outdoors 365 a Year and I provide one-to-one support to swimmers through Swim Mentoring.
