Swimming to Freedom
In September 2023, Matt Newbury and his friend Queenie Martin attempted to swim from Robben Island to Cape Town, a swim of nearly five miles across cold, shark infested waters. By Matt Newbury.
I’ve wanted to swim the 7.5km from Robben Island to the mainland for more than 20 years, ever since I spent a year living in Cape Town in 1999/2000.
