A reader got in touch to ask our health columnist Dr Hussain Al-Zubaidi’s advice on going back to swimming outdoors following a heart attack

Dr Hussain says: Sorry to hear about your recent heart attack. I hope you are recovering well. When home, you should start to regain your normal level of activity steadily over the first six weeks. However, this is a target timescale, and some people take longer. The extent of your heart attack, other health problems and your previous level of activity will all affect your recovery time. So, you can certainly dip back in but it’s essential to ease back in slowly and safely. Start by speaking with your cardiology team – they can refer you to an NHS cardiac rehabilitation programme. This helps rebuild fitness under expert supervision.

Before heading outdoors, get comfortable swimming in a pool again. When you’re ready for open water, choose warmer months and avoid cold water at first. Cold temperatures put extra strain on the heart, so enter the water gradually to give your body time to adapt.

The key is patience listen to your body, take it step by step, and enjoy the process of returning to the water.
