Use the pool to transform your technique
Swim coach Nicola Butler explains how using pool features, from the lane ropes to pool markings, can improve your swim technique
For swimmers of all levels, the pool is far more than a place to count lengths or escape the harsh winters. It is a controlled environment where every feature, from pool markings, flags and even lane ropes can be harnessed to refine technique, build efficiency, and unlock new levels of performance. Whether you are a beginner just starting your swim adventure or a competitive swimmer chasing hundredths of a second, the pool offers unique opportunities to break down complex movements, receive immediate feedback and systematically improve every aspect of your swimming.
Why controlled environments accelerate technical progress
Swimming in a pool offers a level of control and consistency that is unmatched by open water environments. It allows swimmers to focus easily on stroke mechanics, breathing, and body position without the distraction of waves, temperatures and other environmental factors. This predictability is especially key for beginners who benefit from a safe, structured space to build on basic skills and for advanced swimmers who can master their technique with precision.
In a pool, variables such as water temperature, depth, and lane sizes are mostly universal, making it easier to measure progress and replicate drills. Lane ropes, markings and often flags, provide constant feedback on alignment, pacing, and turns. Equipment is easily used and often can be borrowed, and the option of coaches and peers facilitates immediate and specific feedback. These factors combine to create an environment where swimmers can experiment, receive corrections, and reinforce good habits with every length.
How lane ropes support technique
By consciously using lane ropes as alignment tools, swimmers can develop better proprioception and minimise wasted energy caused by zigzagging or drifting.
Lane ropes are more than just a visual or separation tool, they are essential for maintaining direction, minimising interference, and reducing turbulence (especially if you are lucky enough to swim in a pool with permanent racing ropes in). Constructed from a series of buoyant disks, ropes float on the water’s surface and absorb waves generated by swimmers, helping to keep each lane calm and orderly. For swimmers, the line visual provides a constant reference point, making it easier to swim straight and practice more streamlined efforts. For all strokes, staying centred in the lane reduces drag and maximises efficiency, which can be replicated with correct sighting patterns in open water too.
Wave reduction: Swim close to the lane rope during your pool sessions to experience the difference in turbulence and learn to adjust your stroke for smoother water.
Using markings for technical perfection
- Centre line: Swim directly above the black/blue line to maintain a straight path. This is especially helpful for beginners and during certain drills.
- Turning T: As you approach the T, prepare to initiate your turn. The T is typically placed two meters from the wall, providing a consistent reference for timing turns.
- Target line (cross): Use the cross on the wall to aim your push-off during turns.
- Backstroke flags: Count your strokes from the flags to the wall to perfect your backstroke turns and avoid misjudging the distance.
- 15m mark: Practice underwater dolphin kicks and breakouts, ensuring you surface before the 15m mark to comply with competition rules.
Kit corner: Parachutes
Used in the water or on land, resistance tools build power and endurance by forcing swimmers to work against added drag. They are particularly effective for sprint training and developing explosive strength. They are versatile for all strokes, non-intrusive to kicking and flip turns, and come in different sizes for varying resistance levels. Parachutes used in regular training help swimmers build muscle and feel faster when they take the parachute off. They also pack nicely into a kit bag meaning you can easily take them to most pools without taking up too much space! Master a tumble turn with this attached and you are definitely winning!
